Bandhavgarh National Park, located in the northern part of Madhya Pradesh, India, is home to some of the world’s most beautiful and fascinating wild animals. However, its location in the heart of India makes it particularly accessible to both travelers and wildlife enthusiasts from all around the country. Here are some ways to get the most out of your trip to Bandhavgarh National Park.
Safari at Bandhavgarh National Park
Things to do in Bandhavgarh
Right at its heart, Bandhavgarh is a wildlife park. It’s a great place for spotting tigers in their natural habitat—but it has other tourist attractions, too. There are beautiful temples and cave paintings at nearby Bhimbetka. There’s also a large lake, where you can go boating or canoeing (on special days, you may even spot crocodiles). Plus, there are several beautiful lakes within Bandhavgarh itself: Keoladeo Ghana National Park and Sat Tal Lake both offer pleasant walks along their banks.
To know about the flora and fauna
The reserve area of 230 km is divided into three zones. There are all kinds of animals, birds, and reptiles in Bandhavgarh national park. The most common large mammal found here is Tiger and Leopard. Few other mammals include sloth bear, Indian wild dog (vulpine), chital, sambar deer, and gaur. The small mammals found here include porcupine, gray langur, rhesus macaque, mouse deer, etc. Reptiles like king cobra are also seen inside the reserve forest region.
For culture and heritage
Many Indian tourists want to head straight for Delhi or Agra, but that’s selling Madhya Pradesh short. Head west, where you’ll find historical Bhopal, famous for its palaces and gardens. If a few days of exploring is all you have time for, Madhya Pradesh has an amazing itinerary set up: First, head west along Lake Kushtal (the country’s second-largest lake), then north into Bandhavgarh National Park. When hunger strikes, stop at Rewali village (located right outside of Bandhavgarh) for a buffet of locally grown food. Don’t forget your camera! Not only are you in one of India’s most scenic spots—but you can also see sloth bears here.
Camping sites in Bandhavgarh
There are more than 100 designated camping sites inside Bandhavgarh National Park. These sites are available on both an advance and walk-in basis. During your visit, you can stay at both basic or deluxe campsites depending on what you prefer. Choose a site that is easily accessible by road or one near a water source, especially if you’re traveling with children. You should also consider whether your campground has clean drinking water as well as toilets and bathrooms nearby. On average, each site costs approximately Rs 350 (US$5) per night and must be booked at least two days in advance by phone. However, these prices will increase during major holiday periods such as Diwali and Christmas.
